300 people are expected to fill the main auditorium of the BRIGITTE MADLANGA JUSTICE COLLEGE in Pretoria where KZN’s police chief, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is set to testify. The commission has noted that there are legal proceedings being launched, the commission operates on the basis of respect for our courts and will respect the outcome of the court proceedings. But having said that, we plan to have Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi at the first public hearing.
Among their challenges, the MKP’s has questioned the appointment of Madlanga as a sitting judge to invistage allegations into the judiciary, the commission was set to invistigation allegation corruption and political killings in the criminal justice system.
In July, Mkhwanazi shocked the country with claims that political interference led to an attempt to disband the Political Killings Task Team. President Cyril Ramaphosa has an opportunity to break this cycle, at the very commencement of the Madlanga commission today, he should publicly commit to treating the commission findings and recommendation as if they were legally binding once the commission has finished it’s work. Such a commitment would demostrate leadership, as well as a gunuine willingness to restore faith in our institutions.
